There Is No Return
the scent of never coming back
where mint and hawthorn
lean and mingle
where the road curves
towards an empty house
the touch of forgetting
in a caress of ferns
curve of stair-rail
steps going down
to the river and a drowning
I smell grief in the bank of heather
and turn away
to evade the taste of pain
When Rain Comes
I walk the river
and feel the current hard
against my legs
as I move
upstream through rapids
to where you sit
singing winter psalms
to the falling clouds
we drink sky
and write poems together
To The Slough
Comes a moment
between shadows
when I escape
slide between trees
and go unseen
to the slough
where wind
whispers endearments
to bird, reed and water
there, as light
shreds ripples
and kisses my neck
I listen to the sun
